On a sun-kissed morning that seemed to have been custom-ordered, we embarked on our jaunt to the enchanting Boscobel House. The treasured hideaway of royalty from eras past, this historical gem did not disappoint as it unfurled its stories in a tapestry of heritage and horticulture.
A Stitch in Time – The Royal Oak Adventure
Our adventure began with the captivating tale of King Charles II and his daring escape. As we wandered through the rooms, the whisperings of the past seemed to echo through the corridors, culminating at the famed Royal Oak, which provided a leafy sanctuary for the monarch on the run. You could almost hear the rustling of the troops below, oblivious to the stowaway above them.
The Time-Travelling Gardens
We then stepped out into what can only be described as horticultural bliss. The Boscobel Gardens are a vibrant pastiche of color and fragrances, where every turning path is a teleportation to a distinct era. The formal garden with its topiary sentinels and the wilderness with its unfettered delights, both competed for our affections. One could spend hours frolicking among the flowers or simply lounging on the elegant lawns.

Every nook of this house and its grounds seemed to hold a secret waiting to be discovered. The dovecote, the orchard, and the Priest’s Hole where it is said Father Huddleston hid. Each told the tale of ingenuity and survival, making our visit not just amusing, but also incredibly thought-provoking.
